The front organizations to contemporary changes go through challenging times for the pursuit of environmental preservation reconciled with its economic activity. The study presented historical features of environmental management and entered the theoretical dimension of the environmental management system ISO 14001 and on benefits and difficulties related to this standard. The methodological design of the research literature has methods and reasoned field in the case study. For data collection was used an interview guide in an industrial company certified to ISO 14001 in the state of Goiás The results showed that the benefits for the implementation of the standard that were perceived by the company are:. Reducing energy consumption, improving process efficiency, generation of reduced waste and disposal costs, use of recoverable resources, improved productivity, external benefits related to the relationship with stakeholders belonging to the company and the competitive market environment and organizational learning and increased awareness environmental. With regard to implementation difficulties the company realized that training was a difficulty, but identification of environmental aspects, periodic audits, documentation, standard procedures, commitment of workers and maintenance has not been a difficulty.ptGestão ambientalSistema de gestão ambientalISO 14001
