The study examined the implementation of the project Smart City in the Mind at a school in Goiânia, which simulated urban ecosystems to integrate financial, tax, and citizenship concepts. The main objective was to explore how financial education can contribute to regional development. The specific objectives were: to identify the key concepts of financial education and smart cities; to understand the relationship between education, fiscal citizenship, and regional development; to analyze the project’s impact on the development of students’ financial, civic, and digital competencies; and to assess the effectiveness of the active methodologies applied in the project. The adopted methodology was action research, employing iterative cycles of diagnosis, intervention (workshops based on urban simulation), observation, and reflection, involving elementary school students. The results revealed progress in students’ understanding of financial and tax concepts, development of civic awareness, family engagement, and a redefinition of Mathematics as a practical tool, as well as overcoming cognitive barriers and promoting critical financial inclusion. The study concludes that the articulation of contextualized financial education, active methodologies, and public policies is essential to reducing inequalities and fostering socially just smart cities.ptEducação financeiraDesenvolvimento RegionalEscolas públicas periféricas
