Contemporary slavery is a serious problem in the world. In Brazil, it was recognized as a problem in the 1990s and since then many efforts have been made to combat this practice. Dealing with contemporary slavery means seeking to understand the mechanisms that lead people to submit to such degrading conditions and how, subjected to these conditions, their most intrinsic values end up being removed, reducing them to objects that are sources of profit. This research seeks to highlight the characterization of contemporary slave labor and its implications for the human dignity of enslaved people.
