Municipal planning demands a holistic approach, considering social, economic and environmental aspects, especially given the population increase, which now exceeds eight billion inhabitants. This study’s theme was Municipal Sustainable Development. The general objective was to identify opportunities and challenges in meeting the goals of Sustainable Development Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities of the United Nations 2030 Agenda (SDG 11/UN). As a theoretical framework, themes such as urban sustainable development, municipal public management and the sustainable development objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda were explored. To this end, research characterized as qualitative with a descriptive and narrative nature was carried out. Online questionnaires were administered, analyzing the Municipal Sustainable Development Index and the adopted public policy guidelines. Of the 50 municipalities investigated, which represent the target population of the research, 10 were chosen through a non-probabilistic sample. In this method, data was collected following a characteristic known as accessibility or convenience. For data analysis, the Laurence Bardin technique was used, in which the results were coded resulting in data referring to environmental management policies; sustainable economic development; community engagement and municipal education; urban planning and sustainable infrastructure; preservation of natural resources. The responding municipalities effectively contributed to the construct. Data analysis brought to light challenges and opportunities for municipal sustainable development. The main aspects include the scarcity of qualified labor, the need to improve the administrative organization and integration with the Municipal Multi-Year Plan (PPA), the promotion of environmental education and community awareness, the improvement of urban infrastructure and the management of waste. Strategies such as policies to stimulate a sustainable economy, strengthening civil society participation, investments in environmentally friendly infrastructure and encouraging intermunicipal partnerships are among the proposed actions. Such measures reflect literature guidelines to boost sustainable development in Brazilian municipalities, highlighting the importance of integrated and collaborative approaches.ptsustentabilidade urbana municipalAgenda 2030ODS 11Oportunidades e desafios frente às políticas públicas dos municípios brasileiros à luz do ods 11
